An academy built on a working artist's standards

The Makeup Masterclass trains makeup artists and teaches women to do their own makeup, with the rigour of a formal academy and the experience of an artist who works in the industry every week.

Our purpose

Too much makeup education either shows you a look and leaves you to it, or certifies you after a weekend. We believe makeup artistry deserves the same structure as any other profession: a clear curriculum, practice that is properly assessed, and feedback from someone who does the work.

The Makeup Masterclass offers that structure online today, so that anyone in South Africa can study with us. It is also the foundation for The Makeup Masterclass College, the in-person campus we are building in Pretoria.

The academy standard

Four principles shape every programme we teach.

  • Assessed, not only watched

    On professional programmes, every module ends with practical work that is marked by the faculty, with written feedback. Certificates are earned, not issued on payment.

  • Every skin tone

    Techniques are demonstrated across the range of South African skin, from the fairest to the deepest, and students are assessed on more than one.

  • Hygiene first

    Sanitation, kit hygiene and client safety are the first module of the diploma and are checked in every practical assessment.

  • Taught by working artists

    Our curriculum comes from real bridal mornings, real sets and real clients, and is updated as the industry changes.
